Every golfer lives for moments like holing out a difficult chip, draining a long putt or shooting your career-low round. But few may be more gratifying than smashing a drive high, long and straight down the middle of the fairway.

Truth is, golf is a multifaceted game played tee to green, but the ability to boom towering tee shots consistently is often the most enjoyable.

So, when a GOLFTEC student’s driver game is lacking, where do our Coaches often start? With a part the swing that may surprise you: the follow-through.

It may seem as though the follow-through of your swing doesn’t matter since the ball has already been hit, but there are some distinct differences between the follow-throughs of the best ball strikers and the worst.

Stretch out your follow-through for longer, straighter drives

You may be familiar with the common golf term, “chicken wing,” which explains how the lead elbow bends and the wrist extends, or cups, in the downswing through impact.

The result of this undesirable move is often unsolid contact and short, wayward shots. Especially with the driver.

In the video below, Nick Clearwater shares a simple drill to combat this move by learning to stretch, or extend, the club out more toward the target in the follow-through. Focusing on this movement will ultimately aid your downswing and impact positions by shallowing the angle of attack – a key ingredient for those long bombs from the tee.
