Work These Mountain Village and Telluride Restaurants Into Your Visit

The gondola connecting Telluride to its well-heeled Mountain Village ascends 1,800 feet before stopping midway at Station St. Sophia, home to Allred’s Restaurant. In addition to the vertiginous views of the mountains and town lights below, Allred’s purveys scrumptious appetizers like parmesan dusted potato croutons and waygu beef carpaccio with kale chips, and entrees such as cider-brined pork chop with white grits, gremolata crusted king salmon and a bourbon marinated elk short loin. The sticky toffee pudding cake is as exquisite as the wine list is enclyclopedic and varied.

A few steps from the Mountain Village gondola, at the Inn at Lost Creek, sits Siam’s Talay Grille. Talay translates to seafood, and this version of Telluride’s popular Siam restaurant emphasizes salmon, mahi-mahi, tuna, scallops, shrimp, lobster and sole in such signature sauces as thailandaise, choo chee curry, Thai sweet chili, mango and wasabi pepper. In a happy coincidence, the guitarist accompanying our fishy feast specialized in vintage Hot Tuna tunes.

If you’re looking for the area’s best burger (served on a brioche and made with ground brisket, chuck and short rib) and Bloody Mary (served with bacon, shrimp, celery, and a bleu cheese-stuffed olive), duck into the Tomboy Tavern, where the rainbow trout dip and shrimp tacos are darn good too.
