Weinstein (5A) and Sargent (4A) Win State Titles

Mary Weinstein wins the 5A Girls Golf Championship

Four-putting the 18th hole for a double-bogey doesn’t usually result in a state championship. But Regis Jesuit’s Mary Weinstein (above) had so dominated the previous 35 holes of the CHSAA 5A Girls Golf State Championship that she could have missed two more putts and still have won by a stroke.

Going 71-69 at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, the 2015 CWGA Junior Player of the Year and 2015 CWGA Junior Stroke Play champ was the only player in the field to shoot under par in both rounds. Weinstein’s four-under-par 140 for the two-round tournament withstood a tournament-low 68 in the second round by Grandview freshman Amy Chitkoksoong, whom she bested by four strokes.

Chitkoksoong and teammate Morgan Sahm finished second and third individually, leading Grandview to the state team title by two strokes over Regis Jesuit, 462 to 464. Fellow Wolves Caitlin O’Donnell and Ryan Morgan finished 30th and 51st respectively.

Weinstein will be attending Regis University in the fall, while Sahm, who won the 2015 CJGA Tournament of Champions, will play for the University of Northern Colorado.

CHSAA 4A Girls Golf State Champion Erin Sargent will play her golf at The University of Wyoming in the fall. The Silver Creek High School senior, who last year qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open, edged Caroline Jordaan of Colorado Academy by a stroke at Pueblo Country Club.

That stroke was her birdie putt on the 330-yard 18th, which trumped Jordaan’s par. As with the 5A tournament, the runner-up’s school won the team trophy, with Colorado Academy crushing its nearest competitor, Cheyenne Mountain, by 52 strokes. Jordaan, Kacey Godwin (T4), Cassie Kneen (T12) and Trinity Goderstad (T12) comprised the victorious squad.

And in related news, last year’s 4A champion, Jennifer Kupcho, finished T6 in the NCAA Division I championships at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. The Wake Forest freshman carded a 5-under-par 283, 11 strokes behind individual national champion Virginia Elena Carta of Duke.
