Two Drills to Avoid Chunking and Hitting it Fat

Even the best golfers in the world can’t avoid hitting it fat sometimes. Here are tips to help.

Two Drills to Avoid Chunking and Hitting it Fat

Whether your preference is to take large chunks of the earth with each iron shot or pick it clean off the turf, we're certain of one thing: you've hit fat chunk shots before and you're going to hit them again.

But hey, even the best fall victim to the occasional chunk. Look no further than Jordan Spieth's 12th hole on Sunday at the 2016 Masters.

So let's help at least avoid the frequency at which you hit fat shots with these two drills that you can take to the driving range. These tips and drills will help to ensure that you're hitting the ball where you need to be on the club face. As you can see below, some of the best drills are the easiest to learn, but perhaps difficult to master.

Drill #1: Place a tee next to your ball on the driving range

This drill is about as simple as it gets, and also very effective. If you fall into the category of a “divot digger,” simply place a tee next to your ball on the range. This will help you quickly identify where you are taking a divot to stop golf fat or heavy shots. Taking a divot too far behind the ball not only leads to fat shots, but also decreased distance even if you manage to hit it solid.

Drill #2: Place tape behind your ball on a range mat.

As many Colorado golfers know, we're often forced to hit off the mats at the driving range due to the snow or soggy grounds. Stick a roll of tape in your golf bag for next time and be prepared to improve your game. Watch as Steve Buzza (Twitter: @SteveBuzzaGolf) demonstrates the benefits of this simple drill.
