How to Release the Putter

How to release the putter tips
In the video below, learn how to release the putter properly and consistently, a drill to learn on the range, and what Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods do effectively.

“It’s a pendulum.”

“It’s all in the shoulders.”

“Straight back and straight through.”

“Aim small, miss small.”

Odds are that you’ve heard, read, or been told one of these phrases regarding your putting stroke and if so, at least one of these phrases has danced in your head while you’re standing over the ball about to hit a putt. For many, the result has been inconsistent putting. Whether due to bad alignment or a jerky putting motion, you’ve probably at some point struggled with distance control or direction control…or both. Besides, you’re not going to blame it on reading the greens, right? Of course you read that putt correctly!

Ted Norby, Director of Instruction at National University Golf Academy, offers his tips on correctly releasing the putter in the excellent video below. You’ll learn:

  • What really should happen when the putter releases and passes the hands and the mistake many amateurs make
  • How the toe of the putter should release and turn naturally
  • How to hold the putter so it can hang and swing like a pendulum
  • Why the shaft of the club should work together with the forearms
  • A drill to use when practicing or warming up with your thumb and index finger to release the putter correctly

Take this drill with you to the putting green and see if these help your stroke!
