Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club: A Hidden Gem
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO – In all of Colorado, there is one course that golf lovers simply must play. If you don’t know where to look you may miss the golf course tucked up in the Fish Creek Canyon of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Built on a parcel in excess of 150 acres along the flanks of Mt. Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club is a Robert Trent Jones II-designed golf course that opened for 18-hole play in the summer of 1974. The surface consists of bent grass greens and bluegrass/ryegrass fairways and roughs. Fairway and greenside bunkers come into play on all 18 holes with almost 70% of them protecting the large, undulating greens. Water hazards appear throughout the course in the form of a small strategic lakes on holes No. 8 and 9, and the scenic Fish Creek flows through five of the holes. Aged aspen and evergreen trees shape the majority of holes on this magnificent layout, enhancing this unique, pristine setting. Abundant wildlife will accompany you throughout the pine and aspen tree-lined holes.
Currently managed by Troon, the course is semi-private and attracts new members as well as hotel guests staying at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort Villas, local players and other Steamboat visitors. “It’s great seeing a first-time guest come back in after their round is over,” said James MacDougall, PGA Director of Golf, “the back nine impresses everyone every time.” Golfers who have played the course not only marvel at the scenic splendor, but have often commented on the enjoyment of using “all of the clubs in their bag.”
While currently carrying a slope rating from the back tees consistent with the top Colorado courses, it maintains comfortable playing characteristics from the less difficult teeing areas and can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. With full turf coverage for generous landing areas, the Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club is an attractive alternative to some of the target course designs that other mountain golf courses offer, adding to its popularity.
Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club boasts many awards and top ratings including “The Best Mountain Golf Course” according to Colorado’s Best: The Essential Guide to Favorite Places, and one of “America’s Greatest Golf Resorts” according to Fairways. Four-Star Ratings from Golf Digest, and an “Excellent” rating from Foder’s Golf Digest: Places to Play. Not only does the course receive top kudos, but the staff is considered above par, receiving one of the top rankings for “Colorado Golf Operations for Customer Service Satisfaction” from Colorado Golfer.
