PGA Tour’s Rollercoaster Season Continues

Who Will You Watch This Week at the BMW Championship?

Parity. That’s the operative word of the PGA Tour this season, where week after week—save three or four—no-name players have defied the odds and snatched million-dollar paychecks from big-name veterans. Most tournaments have been more like watching absurd animations of Road Runner perplex and steamroll Wile E. Coyote, complete with floating stars and suggestive curse words.

Monday’s final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship was yet another cartoonish replay. We watched Chris Kirk post the biggest win of his unremarkable five-year pro career; last week it was Hunter Mahan going low to claim The Barclays title.

That’s the way it’s been all season, with who-dat characters like Brian Harman, Kevin Streelman, Seung-Yul Noh, Steven Bowditch, Matt Every, John Senden, Patrick Reed, Kevin Stadler and Scott Stallings adding to a burgeoning entourage that have made tongue-poking “meep-meep!” squeals on the 72nd hole entirely too commonplace.

If it’s not apparent yet, pay close attention: This year on the PGA Tour, anyone can win. On any given weekend…

And that’s what makes the BMW Championship—being played this week at historic Cherry Hills Country Club and is the next important leg of the FedExCup Playoffs—such incredibly high drama. Because at stake is about $67 million in accumulated prize money, the kind of high-grade bird seed that would engorge the GNP totals of a lot of countries.

Adding to the high-altitude theater: The Tour is finally returning to Colorado after an eight-year absence. Tickets are still available for this don’t-miss event in Denver.

Looking for a name or two to watch? Fuhgeddboutit. This golf writer, at least, has learned the folly of picking a winner.
