Olkowski and Hillary Win Inaugural JGAC Tour Championship

The Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado—a partnership between the Colorado PGA, Colorado Golf Association and Colorado Women’s Golf Association—concluded its highly successful inaugural season with its Junior Tour Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club.

The top 40 boys and top 20 girls on the season-long points list competed Saturday and Sunday, with Trevor Olkowski of Grand Junction and Charlotte Hillary of Englewood respectively taking the championships.

A senior at Grand Junction High School who has verbally committed to play for the University of Colorado in 2017, Olkowski birdied holes 16 and 18 on the final day to finish at 5-under-par 139, two shots ahead of Luke Trujillo of Colorado Springs, Griffin Barela of Lakewood and Coleson Krantz of Windsor. Olkowski also bested his brother, Canon, by five strokes.

Krantz, who has also committed to CU, led his future teammate by as many as three strokes on the back nine, but stumbled with bogeys on 14 and 15 and a double on 17. The winner of the Boys 4A High School Championship, Trujillo chipped in for an eagle on 18 to card the low score of the day, a 68.

CJAC Tour Champion Charlotte Hillary at Cherry Hills

On the distaff side, Hillary, a Kent Denver freshman, triumphed on her home course. Her even-par 146 proved three shots better than Lauren Lehigh of Loveland. Caroline Jordaan of Cherry Hills Village and Kelsey Webster of Boulder rounded out the top four.

At the post-round banquet at Cherry Hills, Webster received recognition as the Most Improved Girl player, dropping her handicap by 10 strokes during the season. Arik Roberts, a senior at Palmer High School in Colorado Springs whose index dropped from a 4 to a plus 1.2, took the boys honor.

A J Ott, JGAC Player of the Year
AJ Ott of Fort Collins and, now, CSU, earned JGAC Player of the Year honors.

Now a freshman on the Colorado State University golf team, AJ Ott of Fort Collins earned Player of the Year honors, having won the Colorado Junior PGA Championship by seven strokes. He also advanced to the semifinals of the Colorado Junior Match Play and finished second in both June’s AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior at Highlands Ranch Golf Club and the national PGA Junior Series event at the Eisenhower Course at the Air Force Academy.

Mary Weinstein, JGAC Player of the Year
5A Champion and double major winner Mary Weinstein earned JGAC Player of the Year honors.

Mary Weinstein of Highlands Ranch was named the Girl Player of the Year. The Regis University frosh won two JGAC majors—the Junior Amateur Championship and the Colorado Junior PGA Championship—in addition to the 5A girls state high school championship. The CWGA’s 2015 Junior Player of the Year also acquitted herself quite admirably on bigger stages, finishing fifth in the Optimist International Junior and 15th in the Junior PGA Championship.

Concurrent with events at Cherry Hills, the top 32 JGAC players ages 6-13 squared off in a Ryder Cup competition at CommonGround Golf Course. After falling behind 9-5 in the foursomes and four-ball matches, “Team Europe” rallied to take the singles, 10-4, and the Cup, 15-13.
