How a Hula Hoop Can Help You to Stop Chipping it Fat

CAGGY Winner Ed Oldham illustrates how swing direction may be your key to consistent chipping

Do you struggle with chipping it fat? Golfers of all skill levels go through rough stretches of the “yips” with their short games, whether it be chipping or putting. One of the most common problems golfers face while chipping is the “chunk” or “fat” chip shot. As we've detailed before, even Tiger Woods has struggled with chipping.

As PGA Master Professional and CAGGY Award WInning Instructor Ed Oldham explains, one reason is that your swing direction may be off. A swing starting too far inside and swinging too far outside (and vice versa) can lead to changes in your swing arc and impact position leading to fat – or even thin – chip shots. Sound complicated? It's not.

Watch Ed explain with a hula hoop for a visualization you can keep in your head the next time you're chipping to get up and in for par.
