Looking back at the top five instruction drills of last year on the GOLFTEC Scramble

We tipped off our “Best of 2018” series with the finest equipment stories that appeared on the GOLFTEC Scramble and now we’re looking back at the top five instruction drills that helped fix slices, increase distance off the tee and eradicate those pesky three-putts.

5. Control your wedge distances

Improving distance control with your wedges, especially on those less-than-full shots, can be one of the most effective ways to lower your scores. Yet, this is maybe one of the most under-practiced areas of the game for a lot of golfers. During a segment on Golf Channel’s ‘Morning Drive,’ Patrick Nuber hit the range to share some tips on refining those crucial distance control skills.

4. Slicing vs. Drawing: Turning a slice into a draw

Was a majority of your year spent trying to fix a slice? Not to worry, nearly all GOLFTEC students (96 percent) come into GOLFTEC wanting to hit anything BUT a slice. Nick Clearwater explained on Golf Channel’s ‘Morning Drive’ the first step to ridding your game of the banana ball is to understand what causes it in the first place. He shared some solid tips to help encourage the proper face-to-path relationship needed for a draw.

3. Can’t stop the three-putts? Watch this…

How many times do you three-putt during a round? Fifty-eight percent of GOLFTEC students average more than three three-putts per round and many are well above that number. If that sounds like you, it may be time to switch up how you practice. Nick Clearwater shares two drills that focus on lag putts and the proper practice distance that’ll help set you up for success on the greens.

2. Want to drive it like Justin Thomas? Increase your shoulder tilt

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past year, you know the guys on the PGA Tour are absolutely crushing the ball off the tee. One of those guys who is not only fun to watch, but makes us want to tune up our own games is Justin Thomas. Patrick Nuber breaks down Thomas’ shoulder tilt, while offering up a drill that can help you improve the tilt in your swing and work toward smashing drives like JT!

1. Move your hips toward the target for better contact

The top instruction drill of 2018 focused on improving contact and consistency, two important skills to lower your scores. A key factor contributing to inconsistent ball striking is hip sway, or how the hips laterally move throughout the golf swing. Nick Clearwater discussed how it can impact your swing with Golf Channel’s Charlie Rymer on ‘Morning Drive.’
