Hale Irwin and young fans.
Hale Irwin signs autographs for young fans at The Broadmoor during the U.S. Senior Open press event.

The Broadmoor and USGA announced the deal during a July 18 press event featuring three-time U.S. Open and two-time U.S. Senior Open champion Hale Irwin, who fielded questions about his participation. Director of Golf Russ Miller shared the story of Irwin’s irritation during the 2008 event, when the carillon in the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun atop Cheyenne Mountain started to peal in the middle of Irwin’s downswing on the first hole.

Unable to stop his swing in time, Irwin dribbled a shot into the rough under a tree about 20 yards from the teeing area. He recovered to make a miraculous par on the hole, but made sure Miller would never forget it should have been a birdie.

After the presser, Irwin and Miller led a troupe of dignitaries—including a number of children, for whom he autographed golf balls—to the tee on the East Course’s fourth hole, the tricky par-3 over water that has factored into many championships (most notably the 1995 U.S. Women’s Open, when Meg Mallon rinsed one and lost the lead).

As Irwin addressed the crowd, high noon struck, prompting the daily chiming of the bells, and a generous laugh from all in attendance—including the 72-year-old legend, who proceeded to hit four balls onto the green 165 yards away.

It served as a reminder that when the clock strikes midnight on August 13, “The Deal of the Century” will disappear.
