CSU Women earn solid fifth place finish in Hawaii

By Drew Kort

After a disappointing second-to-last place finish at the Rebel Beach just a few weeks ago in Las Vegas, the CSU women’s golf squad managed to turn things around in Hawaii.

The team took part in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kaneohe, Hawaii, at the Kaneohe Klipper golf course against a strong field that contained five top-50 teams, per Golfstat. The par-72 course played almost 6,100 yards for the ladies.

Frosh Haley Greb (Pendleton, Oregon) continued her strong play for Colorado State with steady rounds of 76-78-76 to finish at 14 over par. She carded 40 pars for the week-one fewer than the most in the field. Sophomore Ellen Secor (Portland, Oregon) matched Greb’s 3-round total with scores of 79-75-76. The youngsters finished in a tie for 20th and were the low Rams for the tournament.

Katrina Prendergast, the junior from Sparks, Nevada, got off to her usual strong start after she fired an opening 2-over-par 74, but was unable to keep her momentum going. Uncharacteristically, she played her final 36 holes in 13 over par and wound up in a tie for 24th.

Sloot
Sophomore Jessica Sloot finished T39.

Sophomore Jessica Sloot (Fruit Heights, Utah) also played solidly. Her 23-over-par 54-hole total earned her a T39 finish. Sophomore Fiona Hebbel (Leverkusen, Germany) struggled to get anything going with rounds of 84-91-82. She finished 67th.

With strong performances from four players, the Lady Rams finished alone in fifth out of 12 teams at 66 over par. Texas, Oklahoma State, Houston and Texas A&M—all of which are top-31 teams, per Golfstate—were the only teams ahead of the Rams.

No. 6-ranked Texas won the team competition by 24 strokes over second place Oklahoma State at 19 over par. Their Kaitlyn Papp was a big reason why as she took home the individual honors at 3 under par. She was the only competitor to finish in red figures.

The girls will look to further refine their games at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Arizona March 23-25.
