Pioneer Powerhouse: DU Women’s Golf

The dynasty looks for a 12th consecutive conference title

Dynasty: a powerful group or family that maintains its position for a considerable time.

That is exactly what the DU Women’s Golf Team has been doing for more than a decade. After first winning a Sun Belt Conference championship in 2004, the Pioneers have – through conference transitions – put together a collection of 11 consecutive championships. This impressive streak also includes an appearance— and 5th place finish— at the 2009 nationals.

Conference Championships:
Sun Belt 2004 – 2011
WAC 2012
Summit 2013 and 2014

After a 9th place finish at the LSU Tiger Classic this past weekend, the Pioneers now set sights on championship number 12. They will get their chance to defend the Summit Conference title in Monterey Bay later this month.

“We will be better golfers because of this tournament (Tiger Classic) and our finish this week. We’ll be ready to compete at the league championship in a few weeks,” coach Lindsay Kuhle said.

Led by standouts Isabel Southard, Jessica Carty, Mariell Bruun and Elyse Smidinger, the Pioneers currently rank 55th in the nation.

The Summit League title tournament will be hosted at the Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, California April 20-22. One of two former military courses at Fort Ord, the beautiful, yet challenging, par 72, 7,104-yard course sits on Monterey Bay and features all the elements needed for a collegiate golf championship.

Good luck, ladies!
