Nicklaus to Appear at Colorado Century of Golf Gala

Surprise announcement comes at G4 Summit

Feb 11—As the 300-plus attendees at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs found their seats for yesterday’s G4 Summit, Will F. Nicholson Jr. commandeered the podium with an unscheduled announcement.

The one-time President of the USGA and longtime chairman of Augusta National’s Masters Competition Committee revealed that he had secured Jack Nicklaus to appear at the Century of Golf Gala scheduled for this November.

To accommodate Nicklaus’ schedule, the event, originally scheduled for November 21 at The Marriott City Center in Denver, has been moved to November 14 at an as-yet-to-be-named location because the Marriott is unavailable that night. One option is the Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center.

Nicklaus bookended his competitive career in Colorado, winning the 1959 U.S. Amateur at The Broadmoor and the 1993 U.S. Senior Open at Cherry Hills Country Club. In between those two USGA championships, he was low amateur in the 1960 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills (“If he'd had any experience,” Ben Hogan said, “he would have won.”) And, of course, he won 18 majors and a total of 73 PGA Tour events.

The Golden Bear has also designed a dozen courses in the Centennial State, including Castle Pines Golf Club, The Broadmoor’s Mountain Course, Cherry Creek Country Club and Breckenridge Golf Club.

In addition, regular Golf Digest and Golf Channel contributor Tim Rosaforte will emcee the event, which will feature numerous celebrities from the golf world.
