First Look: Callaway’s Re-Engineered Irons and Hybrids

New Big Berthas Are Now ‘Two Clubs Longer’

More distance, more control—that’s the philosophy behind Callaway’s new Big Bertha irons and hybrids (pictured above), both of which have been newly engineered with the company’s proprietary 360 Face Cup technology.

For the irons, the hollow body construction is being hailed as a “big step forward” that is boasting distances that are two clubs longer than previously released Callaway clubs.

“This is the first time that a face cup has been put onto an iron,” said Senior VP of Research and Development Alan Hocknell. “That means we have control over the thickness of the area immediately adjacent to the face, as well as control of the thickness of the face. We made it thin and have created extra ball speed, not just in the center, but all over the clubface.

“When we did that, we have been measuring ball speeds that are genuinely two clubs longer [than other recently produced Callaway irons],” he said. “We’re hitting the 6 iron as long as a 4 iron… It generates great ball speed but still maintains great ball control, and it happens all the way through the bag.”

Callaway’s new Big Bertha hybrids also feature 360 Face Cup technology, and are equipped with an adjustable hosel that the company says will allow players 4-degrees of adjustable loft and two different lie angles.

“The new hybrids are designed to give golfers a more efficient and successful way of integrating hybrids with traditional iron sets,” said Hocknell. “Now you can actually dial in the trajectory of your hybrids and match them against your replacement irons.”

The new Big Bertha irons and hybrids, constructed with special heat-treated stainless steel, are scheduled to be available at golf retailers nationwide and online at callawaygolf.com starting Oct. 17, 2014.
