DU’s Mikalsen Selected to Compete at NCAA Regionals

Sophomore Standout Earns Individual Bid

DENVER – Despite a sixth place team finish at last week’s Summit League Championship, the DU Pioneers will still be represented at the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals in San Diego next week.  Petter Mikalsen, the sophomore standout from Stavanger, Norway, has been selected to participate in the regional tournament as an individual.  Between his ranking as the top men’s golfer in the Summit League (69th nationally among D1 schools) and being named Summit League Golfer of the Week an impressive five times this season, we’d say Mikalsen definitely earned his invitation.

“I am truly excited for Petter, as he has had a terrific season,” said DU head coach Erik Billinger.  “The opportunity to compete for an NCAA title is alive and well for Petter and we will prepare this week for San Diego next week.  The DU community is all behind Petter and is so proud of him.”

The NCAA West regional will take place next week at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Originally designed by Pete, Perry and Alice Dye in 1988, the par 72, 6,947-yard course was remodeled in 2000 by John Fought and PGA Tour professional Tom Lehman. (Lehman also masterminded 2014’s “softening” of Ironbridge Golf Club in Glenwood Springs)

“It’s known as a challenging layout and will challenge every part of your game,” Billinger stated.

The good news for Mikalsen is that he’s played the course before.

The NCAA West regional is one of six that will be held May 13th-16th. In order to advance to the NCAA finals, Mikalsen will need to finish as one of the top two individuals after players from the five qualifying teams are removed from the scoreboard.

The NCAA Championships will take place May 29-June 3 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida.
