Three-time U.S. Open Champion, World Golf Hall of Famer, and All-American CU Buff Hale Irwin, shows you the fundamentals of the ever-important Flop Shot.

Hale Irwin is widely recognized as one of the most successful American golfers of all time with more than 80 professional wins, including three U.S. Open victories and a record 45 Champions Tour titles. Best known for being the lone survivor of  “The 1974 Massacre at Winged Foot”, Irwin’s short-game prowess made him an exceptionally dangerous opponent on tough golf courses— especially on slick greens.

Hale’s short game was in excellent form that weekend in New York and now the former standout CU defensive back is here to help you along your way on a vital shot to have in the bag: The Flop Shot. The Flop Shot is one of the hardest shots in the game to master, but if done correctly, can help players stop the ball inches from their target with little-to-no runout. This short video will show you Irwin’s fundamentals to hitting the high flop with precision and consistency. Take a look below!

Flop Shot Fundamentals:

  • Open the trail foot to create more depth in the backswing
  • Aim left of target (right of target for lefties)
  • Open the clubface
  • Quiet the hands and take a slower, more controlled backswing
  • Sweep beneath the ball, rather than striking down on it
