2019 Buick Envision AWD Premium II

Buick delivers a powerful, nimble, smooth-riding luxury crossover.

The well-executed update to the Buick Envision looks more expensive outside, thanks to new fascias, LED lights and wheels, and its interior has had its materials upgraded so as to be class-average or slightly better.

Buick’s flowing design works well here, and the choice of a tree-inspired but not timber-aping faux wood is pleasing. The eight-inch infotainment interface is easy and quick responding and the seating is quite comfy, front and back.

There are a few oddities for a luxury-class vehicle however: most annoying is an uncouth ventilation system, which is super-loud and undermines the otherwise relaxing experience.

Powertrain upgrades include a revised, 2-liter turbo with outputs of 252hp and a stout 295lb-ft of torque; this smooth and willing engine teams really well with a new nine-speed automatic, creating a terrific combination. You barely feel shifts and the Buick feels quick now.

Its ride is generally quite relaxing and handling more than adequately competent, if not exactly engaging. The Envision’s problem is that it doesn’t seem to lease competitively (most crossovers in this price range are leased) when well equipped and—historically—the brand hasn’t held value well outside of the heartland, which exacerbates the problem.

But these things aren’t the fault of the Envision itself and for 2019 Buick has lowered sticker prices to offer more value. The Envision is actually is a very solid contender now in the premium luxury crossover class and another step forward from a revitalized, iconic American company.
