PLAYING IN THE WINTER

I came to golf late in life (I’m 55 now). Been swinging at it for two years. Still trying to figure it out—but love the game.

I live near a course where I can golf year round. I often walk in the winter with nobody else out there.

Do you have recommendations for a cold weather golf ball? I’m not a long hitter, and I can’t afford losing any distance.

Thanks—new to the site….really like it.

Years ago, I would play golf during the cold weather, at that time the coldest temperature I experienced was 28 degrees. I’m spoiled now & no longer have to play in subfreezing temperatures. Here is what my 4-some would do. 1) Keep ALL of the golf balls inside the house “room temperature” before our rounds. 2) Play with either Yellow or Orange colored golf balls which would make it easier to find especially with the snow covered fairways. 3) USE low compression golf balls. At that time, golf balls compression would exceed ratings of 100. Manufacturers felt the higher the hardness rating, the longer the distance the ball would travel. Hence, Top Flites were KNOWN as “ROCK” FLITES. ONLY ladies/women’s golf balls were a compression rating of 65-70. Today? The manufacturers are making golf balls that are soft covered yet not a loss in distance. I would look at the following options: Wilson 50/50 Compression rating I believe is “50” copy & paste the links: http://www.wilson.com/wilson/staff/product2.jsp… I would also recommend Srixon “SOFT FEEL” model http://www.srixon.com/balls_softfeel.html or Srixon “AD 333” model http://www.srixon.com/balls_ad333.html You can also try Callaway models “Pearl” http://www.callawaygolf.com/en.BALLS.HXPearl.html or “HX56” http://www.callawaygolf.com/en.BALLS.HXTour56.html Check out Precept’s http://www.preceptgolf.com/en/product/ladyiq180… Hope this information helps. Trial & Error. Tks! Gary

When I was playing as a student at University of Idaho (NOT on the golf team lol), we’d make a point of playing in the light snow. I agree with the non-white golf balls and the low compression.

Personally, I like the low compression golf balls for their feel, anyway, like the Wilson 50/50, and even the Dunlop LoCo.

Also, invest in some of the more high-tech layered golf clothing. I especially like the UnderArmor style of thermal shirt to wear under whatever shirt or sweater you’ve got on… not necessarily the brand, but the type. It’s hard to hit the ball if you’re cold, and then you’re prone to pulling muscles, but if you’re bundled too heavy, you don’t have full range of motion.
