Non-conforming high COR drivers

Good morning everyone,

I work in the pro shop of a Top 100 course, so I’m pretty familiar with the “latest and greatest” toys out there. I have seen several questions lately about the high COR drivers (.860 vs .830), because they are no longer going to be sanctioned by the R&A come 2008, so naturally the hype (especially on eBay, etc.) is to “buy them now – add 20 yards to your drives”. But for me, I’m not convinced that the average/above average golfer will see any difference. I understand the math involved in computing COR just fine, but it’s the other math (clubhead speed) that makes me doubt whether they work. So, simply put, can the average golfer generate enough clubhead speed to make these things work?

Does anyone out there own such a driver, or know someone who does? I’d love to hear about it. Thanks!

I have played a few rounds with those owned by “friends”. I must say, I really did not se ea difference. This is when I was a 5 index, so my swing was grooved enough to take advantage of the ‘hot’ driver. To n o avail. I do have a buddy who has a Callaway from 4 years back given to him by Scotty McCarran that is an illegal thumper, and even thought Jeff has a wounded chicken leg, bad Furyk impression swing, when he hits it, he does get the extra yards, and the drives seem to just have more pop.

The verdict is out, but it is a good thing the R&A is moving away from them. So, which Top 100 are you working for?
