You’ve seen Rory McIlroy win 4 majors among his 20+ worldwide wins. You recently saw him shoot a final round 64 to win the TOUR Championship and wrap up the 2016 FedEx Cup (with a $10 million bonus). And you just saw him as the thorn in the American’s side during the wildly entertaining 2016 Ryder Cup.

You also know that, among his many impressive talents, his driver is as big a key to his success as anything. He consistently ranks in the PGA TOUR’s top 10 in driving distance and in 2016 was 9th with an average drive of 306.9 yards (he was 3rd in 2014).

But what may surprise you is that unlike 6’4″ Dustin Johnson, 6’3″ Bubba Watson, or 6’4″ Tony Finau, Rory unloads all that distance from a 5’9″ frame. So just how does he do it? Aside from an impressive amount of strength that he has built into his body, he possesses an incredibly powerful swing that holds true to Bushnell’s law of being easy to learn, but difficult to master.

So we’ll leave the mastering to you, but here are a few simple tips to learn courtesy of John Cook, Charlie Rymer and Chris DiMarco including:

  1. How to widen your stance similar to great drivers such as Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Tiger Woods and Rory
  2. Why maintaining stability in the lower body can allow more width in the backswing
  3. How keeping your head on the ball and not moving off of it allows you stay accurate
  4. Lastly, how doing all of the above allows you to freely turn as hard as you want to into the ball and avoid hanging back to the right
