Watson’s Instruction Video Will Bust Winter Rust

Popular instruction DVDs updated with advanced lessons

Ya gotta love how winter—like Don McLean’s American Pie marching band—refuses to yield.

No matter. If you’re fleeing the chilly weather like me, you can still work on your golf game. Take advantage by addressing some die-hard swing flaws. Video-based golf lessons are a popular and effective way to do just that, and who better to watch—and learn from—than PGA Tour legend Tom Watson?

Watson knows the game as well as anyone. The current captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team has proven it during five decades of competitive play, winning eight major championships and, when he was 59, nearly another at the 2009 British Open. Insiders have been parlaying his swing tips for years, especially since 2010 when the World Golf Hall of Famer sold 70,000 DVD sets of his critically acclaimed golf instruction program, Lessons of a Lifetime.

If you overlooked the first edition, take heart. Watson just updated it and added 20 new lessons to a program that has improved the games of 88 percent of players who purchased the wildly popular series.

“I felt it was time to provide further instruction in areas not just about hitting the shots, but also about the mental approach of playing the game,” said Watson, who readily credits former mentors like Stan Thirsk and Byron Nelson.

“One of the many great things about golf is that it can never be mastered,” he said. “Sure you can have a good run of play, but sooner or later the wheels will come off. I’ve been experiencing the game for half a century, and I promise you I’m still learning.”

No kidding. I’ve been watching Lessons of a Lifetime II for the last couple of weeks, and frankly I’m blown away by how clearly and effectively Watson communicates and demonstrates key areas of the golf swing. Even better are his advanced lessons, including the pre-shot routine, importance of the bottom arc, handling pressure, the 40-yard wedge shot, and how to maximize time on the practice tee.

Lessons of a Lifetime II is rated five stars. Produced by seven-time Emmy award winner Terry Jastrow, it’s available as a complete 69-lesson package (3 discs and 20-page booklet; $50) or as an Advanced Lessons update (1 disk and 4-page booklet; $25). A portion of sales is being contributed to the Bruce Edwards Foundation for ALS Research. Edwards, Watson’s longtime caddie, passed away from the disease during the 2004 Masters.
