CU Golfer Wins German International Amateur Championship

HAMBURG, Germany — University of Colorado sophomore-to-be Yannik Paul shot a final round 67, taking the lead with two holes remaining and went on to with the 2014 German International Amateur Championship here Sunday.

Paul entered the final round tied with Italy’s Renato Paratore at 13-under par, with four others two strokes back at 11-under.  Both opened the day with birdies on No. 1, but Paratore came back with another on No. 2 to take a 1-stroke lead; both bogeyed No. 3, Paul’s only one of the day.  Paratore held that advantage until the eighth hole, when Paul pulled even with a birdie.

Paul scored a birdie on No. 11 to take his first lead of the day, and both players birdied No. 12.  Paratore pulled even with a birdie on No. 15, but fell one back again after scoring a bogey on 16.  Paul then sealed the win with a birdie on No. 18, finishing with an 18-under par total of 270.

None of the four players who were two back to start the day pulled closer than one shot.

Bolstered by previous finishes of seventh and eighth in the event, Paul was in the top 10 the entire tournament, as he was tied for seventh after 18 holes and for fifth after two rounds.

Paul practically had his way on the 6,600-yard, par-72 Wendlohe Golf Club course.  He recorded two eagles, 27 birdies and 35 pars against just seven bogeys and two triples in recording his 70-67-66-67, 18-under par effort.  He opened each round with an under par score (three birdies and an eagle), and closed each with a birdie.  He played No. 1, a par-5, at 6-under for the tournament, and accomplished a rarity on any level of golf: on the par-3 No. 7 hole, he scored birdie 2s all four rounds.

Paul’s older twin brother who will also be a sophomore this fall at CU, Jeremy, missed the cut by one stroke after turning in a 72-76—148 scorecard for the first two rounds.  As freshmen, the brothers combined to set numerous school records at Colorado, with Jeremy Paul earning second-team All-Pac-12 honors.
