Field Set for 72nd CGA Stroke Play Championship at Pinehurst

The 84-player field is set for the 72nd CGA Stroke Play Championship to be held August 14-17 at the prestigious Pinehurst Country Club in Denver. The 72-hole event will take place Thursday through Sunday and will feature two past champions: CU player and 2007 CGA Player of the Year Patrick Grady of Omni Interlocken who won this event in 2006, and 1997 champion Scott Mendelsohn of South Suburban Family SC who represented Colorado in the 2007 USGA State Team Championship. Grady has won five CGA individual titles in his career, and is the only player to win the CGA Stroke Play (2006), Public Links (2007), and Match Play (2005) Championships. Mendelsohn will be looking for his third CGA individual title as he also won the 2006 CGA Mid-Amateur Championship. 2007 champion Ryan Stephens has since turned professional and is not eligible to defend his title. 

Other players of note in the field include: 

Robert Polk, Colorado GC– 2007 CGA Senior Player of the Year, two-time CGA Senior Stroke Play champion (2005, 2007) and CGA Mid-Amateur champion (2007).

Mark Hubbard, Pinehurst CC– 2007 CGA Junior Player of the Year.

Steve Irwin, Lakewood CC – 2004 CGA Player of the Year. Three CGA individual titles including CGA Match Play (2004) and CGA Mid-Amateur (2003, 2005).

Michael Harrington, Kissing Camels – Recent low qualifying medalist in U.S. Mid-Amateur Sectional Qualifying at Antler Creek GC.

Kory Harrell, Eisenhower GC – Current CGA Junior Stroke Play champion.

Brian Dorfman, Cherry Creek CC – Current CGA Junior Match Play champion.

Beau Schoolcraft, Cherry Hills CC – Current CHSAA 4A State High School champion

Bill Fowler, Rolling Hills CC – Current CGA President, 1989 CGA Mid-Amateur champion, 2005 CGA Western Chapter champion.

Kelly Crone – Deer Creek GC at Meadow Ranch – CGA Senior Match Play champion (2005) and CGA Senior Stroke Play champion (2003).

Steve Murphy, Black Bear GC – 2006 CGA Senior Stroke Play champion.

Chris Carlson – 2004 CGA Mid-Amateur champion.

 

The field will be cut Friday to the low 40 plus ties for the final two rounds.
