Three Players Qualify for 2008 U.S. Amateur
Parker, Colo. – Stanford player Steve Ziegler of Broomfield, Colo. shot 69 in the final round for a four-under par total of 140 to earn the USGA low qualifying medal in the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier at Colorado Golf Club. This will be Ziegler’s second trip to the U.S. Amateur as he also qualified in 2006, the same year he qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur and won the Colorado State High School 5A title. Qualifying second at perfect par (72-72—144) was Jim Doidge of Pueblo, Colo. who won the 2005 CGA Four-Ball Championship and is a four-time Colorado Cup Team selection. In a playoff at 146, CU player and current CGA Public Links champion Derek Tolan of Highlands Ranch, Colo. earned the final spot on the first extra hole over current CGA Junior Stroke Play champion Kory Harrell of Colorado Springs. Tolan has played in numerous USGA championships including the 2002 U.S. Open and most recently the 2007 U.S. Amateur Public Links.
Harrell will be the first alternate, and Dean Clapp of Aurora earned the second alternate position in a playoff at 148 over Michael Harrington of Colorado Springs. Clapp fired the qualifier’s low round, a four-under 68, to the playoff with Harrington for the final alternate position.
The three qualifiers will play in the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship which will be held in North Carolina at Pinehurst (No. 2 and No. 4) on August 18-24.
