Two CU Buffs to Battle for the Colorado Title

Current CU player Derek Tolan of South Suburban Family SC will face fellow CU player Luke Symons of Valley CC in the 36-hole final match of the 108th CGA Match Play Championship at the prestigious Plum Creek Golf and Country Club. Tolan will be looking for his second consecutive CGA victory this season as he recently won the CGA Public Links Championship, and Symons, who won the 2007 CGA Western Chapter Championship, will be vying for his second overall CGA individual title. 

Tolan earned his place in the finals by knocking out defending champion CSU player Zen Brown of Indian Tree GC 3 and 2 in the morning quarterfinal round, then defeating 2004 champion Steve Irwin of Lakewood CC 4 and 3 in the afternoon semifinal round. Irwin had defeated James Kurtenbach of South Suburban GC 4 and 2 in the quarterfinals before losing to Tolan in the semifinals. 

This will be Tolan’s second trip to the CGA Match Play finals, his first being in 2005 when he lost in 38 holes to CU teammate Patrick Grady of Omni Interlocken who nearly returned to the finals to face Tolan for a second time. However Grady, after dominating Matt Riggs of Cherry Hills CC 7 and 6 in the quarterfinals, lost 3 and 2 to Symons in the semifinals. Symons had defeated 2007 CGA Senior Player of the Year Robert Polk of Colorado GC 2 and 1 in a close quarterfinal match before ousting Grady to advance to the finals.

 

--The 36-hole final match will begin at 7:00 am on Friday, with a short break after the first 18 holes. The second 18 holes is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
