Brown Makes Quarterfinals, Still Looking for CGA Match Play Repeat

CSU player Zen Brown of Indian Tree GC made the quarterfinals to continue the defense of his title in the 108th CGA Match Play Championship at Plum Creek Golf and Country Club. Brown defeated both Jacob Lestishen of Lone Tree (morning round of 32) and Dan Kleckner of Pinehurst CC (afternoon round of 16) by identical scores of 1 up to advance. Brown’s opponent will be current CU player and CGA Public Links champion Derek Tolan of South Suburban Family SC who defeated Matthew Brunk of Collindale GC 1 up to make the quarterfinals.
 
Tolan was runner-up in this event in 2005 when he lost in extra holes to fellow CU teammate and 2007 CGA Les Fowler Player of the Year Patrick Grady of Omni Interlocken. Tolan and Grady could meet again as Grady also made it to the quarterfinals by defeating Justin Spray of The CC of Colorado 4 and 2 to advance. Grady’s opponent will be Matt Riggs of Cherry Hills CC who upset the #2 seed Devin Schreiner of Hillcrest GC 1 up in the round of 16. The third CU player to make the quarterfinal round was Luke Symons of Valley CC (#3 seed)  who dominated his round of 16 match winning 6 and 4 over Stuart Allen of Fox Hollow GC. Symons will face 2007 CGA Senior Player of the Year Robert Polk of Colorado GC who won the “battle of the ages” by defeating CGA Junior Player of the Year Mark Hubbard of Pinehurst CC in 20 holes.
 
2004 champion Steve Irwin of Lakewood CC also advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Kyle Danford of Fort Collins CC 6 and 5. Irwin will face James Kurtenbach of South Suburban GC who held on to win in the round of 16 against Jamie Marshall of the CC at Castle Pines on the first extra hole of the match.
 
--The quarterfinal matches begin at 7:00 am on Thursday, and both semifinal matches will be played Thursday afternoon.
--The 36-hole final match will begin at 7:00 am on Friday, with a 30-minute break after the first 18 holes.
